A little over a week in now, and the city is amazing, modern and developed, at least the part that we have seen. The electricity is on, the water does not stink, and the sewers are all in pipes, unlike Chad. It was a nice change to fly into the city and see an entire carpet of lights spread across the Andean valley, while in Chad, the runway lights are all the lights you see. Graffiti messages across the city keep us up to date on all the goings on in the country, from animal rights, respecting bicyclists, and an anti-abortion law. Yesterday we were in a park (with grass!) filled with children playing in pedal cars, men playing some kind of bocce ball, artists and vendors, grilled meat stands, young punks walking leashless dogs, youth making out in the grass, and small soccer games all over. It feels like Latin American (to J), with everyone outside, hanging out, and enjoying a nice Saturday. In fact, the weather seems to always be nice, with cool nights (upper 40s) and mild days (70s). We will revisit this idea of what is Latin America many more times, but so far it is very nice. We will see how long the honeymoon lasts, but so far, this place is amazing, and above our expectations.
K is enjoying work, J starts intensive Spanish tomorrow and A is our cuteness ambassador, as Ecuadorians go bananas (pun intended) for blue-eyed, blond babies with fat cheeks. House hunting is on in earnest, and all the options we've seen are great. Great views of the city, modern conveniences, and friendly people all around. We are looking for extra bedrooms for all of you to come and visit. Get your passport updated, and your visa stamp - we look forward to seeing you!
