International family travel- revealing our best selves

To the beach! Our house was right in front of a reef. The reef was in pretty bad shape, but there were lots of fish and sea turtles. There were also some signs of coral regeneration and the reef area is marked as a coral preservation area, so hope as always for the future.

Hikkaduwa was hit very badly by the 2004 tsunami. The Japanese donated this Buddha statue, which is reportedly an exact replica of the 5th Century 175 feet Barmiyan Buddha Statue destroyed in Afghanistan, also reportedly the height of the wave when it hit this area. The lingering impact of the tsunami was visible in many of the paces we visited.
