Aurangzeb moved the capital of the Mughal empire briefly to a city renamed Aurangabad in 1680, which is close to two cave complexes, the Ellora and Ajanta caves. Each has a a few dozen caves, the former with Buddhist, Hindu and Jain temples carved into a basalt hill, the latter carved into a river valley wall. Each has carvings and painting older than 2000 years old.
